In a significant development ahead of his upcoming administration, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Pete Hegseth, a prominent Fox News host and veteran, as his pick for Defense Secretary. Trump’s selection underscores a continued alignment with strong conservative values, particularly regarding military and veterans’ affairs.
Hegseth, 44, is a former Army officer who served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and is known for his vocal advocacy on military issues as a conservative commentator. During a press conference on Tuesday, Trump extolled Hegseth as “tough, smart, and a true believer in America First,” promising that under Hegseth’s leadership, the U.S. military will regain its prominence on the world stage.
As Defense Secretary, Hegseth would oversee the U.S. Department of Defense, managing the world’s largest military force in what will be his first major political appointment. His confirmation by the Senate is anticipated, given Republican control of the chamber, although Trump has suggested a desire to expedite the confirmation process for key cabinet roles.

Hegseth faces immediate challenges if confirmed, including crucial decisions regarding military aid to Israel and responses to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Trump has previously criticized current levels of U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts and expressed a desire to reassess military spending abroad.

A graduate of Princeton University, Hegseth is also the author of “The War on Warrior,” a book that critiques left-leaning policies that he argues threaten the integrity of the military and veterans’ rights. His position as a Fox News host has allowed him to speak directly to millions of Americans, particularly on issues of national security and veterans’ affairs.
In the backdrop of these appointments, Senator Marco Rubio is rumored to be a leading candidate for Secretary of State; however, Rubio’s position remains unconfirmed as discussions continue in political circles.
Following the announcement, Trump is scheduled to meet with outgoing President Joe Biden at the White House on Wednesday—an event steeped in tradition as they discuss the upcoming transition of power.
As Trump prepares to take office, his selections and policy directions are expected to shape the future of U.S. military engagement and defense strategy, reinforcing alliances and addressing ongoing conflicts within his “America First” framework.
