In this article, we shall be looking at how it occurs and how to identify the father of each baby.
How Heteropaternal Superfecundation Occurs:
This happens in rare cases of fraternal twins where a woman releases an egg and gets intimate with a man and it becomes fertilized, then she releases a second egg in the same menstrual cycle and gets intimate with another man. This second egg will get fertilized as well.
When this happens, the woman will be carrying two babies that have two different fathers.
How To Know The Fathers:
Phylogenetic features may not be accurate in identifying the father’s of the twins, the following tests may be carried out for a more reliable result:
1. A DNA paternity test using the DNA of the babies and the two potential fathers can be done between 2 and 3 days after the babies have been born.
2. A prenatal paternity test can also be done during pregnancy to know if the babies have two different fathers. The blood of the mother to be will be used to analyse the DNA of the unborn babies and matched against those of the potential fathers.
