Enugu State Police Command has advised residents of the state to avoid celebrating the Christmas season with fireworks and knockouts.
The Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, said the prohibition was designed to prevent criminals from exploiting fireworks to commit crimes, reduce public panic, and mitigate risks to lives and property.
According to a statement from the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, Uzuegbu warned businesses and individuals engaged in the sale and use of fireworks to desist immediately.
He also called on parents and guardians to discourage their children and wards from purchasing or using fireworks, emphasizing that violators would face the full weight of the law.
The Commissioner has further cautioned against indiscriminate bush burning during this harmattan season.
He underscored the legal consequences and the grave risks of fire outbreaks, which could endanger lives, destroy property, and disrupt the social and economic well-being of the community.
Uzuegbu urged residents of Enugu State to remain law-abiding and vigilant, avoiding actions that could jeopardize their safety and security during the yuletide and beyond.
He encourages the public to report suspected criminals and their activities to the nearest police station.
The Commissioner of Police wished residents of the state a peaceful and joyous Christmas celebration.
