The Federal Government has issued a health advisory on the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant, XEC, urging health institutions across the country to activate heightened alert systems.
Naija News reports that this call comes in response to the variant’s rapid spread, having been detected in 29 countries after its initial discovery in Australia.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, through its Permanent Secretary, Dr. O.N. Anuma, disclosed the development in a letter addressed to the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors.
Dated December 5, 2024, the letter highlights the potential threat posed by the XEC variant, which has shown a “growth advantage” over existing COVID-19 strains.
Dr. Anuma stated, “I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant which has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries globally.
“You may wish to know that this variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.”
The letter calls for heightened vigilance and immediate action in health facilities, particularly in cases where patients present with COVID-like symptoms.
Medical directors have been advised to activate emergency alert systems, strengthen monitoring protocols, and promote timely sharing of critical data with the Federal Ministry of Health and other relevant stakeholders.
Dr. Anuma emphasized, “Alert systems should be immediately activated throughout our hospitals for high index of suspicion in patients with COVID-like symptoms.”
He further urged health institutions to prioritize coordination with stakeholders to track the variant’s progression, assess its impact, and implement effective containment measures.
“We request your committee to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to share critical data regarding this strain and implement enhanced monitoring protocols.
“Timely information sharing among relevant stakeholders including the Federal Ministry of Health will be vital for effective response strategies,” he concluded.
