He believes this measure is essential for restoring sanity to society. Babangida expressed his support during a visit from the Executive members of the Niger State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), led by its Chairman, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna.
Babangida assured the CAN delegation that he is prepared to advocate for this cause and will discuss it with President Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and Governor Muhammed Umaru Bago. He stated the importance of returning to religious teachings in schools, recalling that during his secondary school years in the 1950s and 1960s, religious knowledge helped foster unity and love between Christians and Muslims.
In his words: “There is the need for Nigeria to go back to the teachings of religious knowledge in schools because this is the only way we can change our society.
“In my secondary school days during the 50s and 60s, Christians and Muslims prayed and played together in love and unity and religious knowledge was one factor that sharpened the society in my growing days but somehow as a nation, we missed it somewhere.”
He commended the state CAN for its efforts to instill moral values in youth and expressed confidence that with their continued advocacy, the government would be interested in supporting initiatives that promote peace and good morals. Babangida praised the CAN’s leadership and their dedication to improving society
