INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu made this known in a statement on Thursday, July 25, during an appearance before the joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, where he discussed preparations for the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.
Prof. Yakubu highlighted that while INEC possesses the capacity to oversee local government elections, this would only be feasible if the legal framework is amended to authorize the Commission to undertake such responsibilities.
He noted that INEC has successfully managed area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, without encountering the typical issues associated with local government elections.
The Commission’s involvement in these elections has ensured regular, stable tenures and has avoided the common practice of caretaker committees.
Additionally, unlike in some states, there has never been a scenario where a single political party has won all available seats in the FCT elections.
Prof. Yakubu asserted that having INEC manage local government elections would benefit democracy, but emphasized that this would require a constitutional amendment to transfer the responsibility from state electoral commissions to INEC>>>CONTINUE FULL READING HERE
