The IGP’s condemnation comes shortly after several Nigerians and leaders called for a review of the process that led to the arrest and detention of the malnourished-looking children in court.

The supposed minors were said to have been arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protest which took place between August 1 and 10, across the nation.

In a swift move, the IGP said that the fainting of six of the suspects was a script played out to create a negative impression in the public.

While stating that medical attention was immediately rendered to the suspects, the IGP in a statement issued by Olumuyiwa Adejobi said, under Nigerian law, individuals who have reached the age of criminal responsibility are accountable for their actions, regardless of their age.

He said, “Today, an unexpected incident in court saw six of the suspects suddenly rush out and faint, drawing media attention in a deliberate and scripted manner to attract negative attention.

“Medical aid was promptly provided to these individuals, demonstrating the Police Force’s commitment to the welfare of those in its custody, irrespective of the allegations they face,” Adejobi noted.

He further urged the citizens to ensure they do not exhibit bias in the case against the arraigned protesters.
