What existed in what is now Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza was a sandy desert environment in 19th-century Ottoman Palestine.
The first European Jews who came there were often socialists, and urban dwellers who decided to farm what seemed like unfarmable land. Local Arabs and Jews lived on the land but few could own it since it belonged to the Ottoman state.
