Nearly six months after its commissioning, the Lagos State Mass Transit Red Line Rail is set to begin partial operations today, August 28, offering free rides to commuters as part of its initial rollout. “This milestone marks the end of months of meticulous planning, staff training, and the installation of security features,” Ojelabi said. He added that a six-week trial run without passengers was conducted to ensure the system’s safety, reliability, and efficiency before today’s launch.
LAMATA’s strategic plan envisions the Red Line as part of a broader network of six rail lines and a monorail, all aimed at alleviating the city’s notorious traffic congestion.
The partial operation phase is intended to gather feedback from select groups of non-paying passengers, which will inform adjustments before full commercial services commence.
The 27-kilometer stretch from Agbado to Oyingbo is just the first phase of the Red Line project. Once fully operational, the rail service is expected to provide a reliable, affordable alternative to road travel, significantly easing traffic in one of Africa’s most congested cities.
“This is more than just a transportation project; it’s a critical component of our vision for a modern, integrated, and sustainable urban transit system,” Ojelabi stated, emphasizing the Lagos State Government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents.
Earlier this year, in March 2024, President Bola Tinubu commissioned the Red Line Rail, which is a 37-kilometer rail line spanning eight stations through Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Yaba, ultimately terminating at Oyingbo. At full capacity, the rail is expected to convey 750,000 passengers daily.
The commencement of the Red Line Rail comes nearly a year after the Blue electric rail was opened to the public.
