Typically, it takes the body a few weeks to several months to produce detectable levels of antibodies after infection. Therefore, most people will test positive within 2 to 8 weeks (14 to 56 days) after exposure. However, in some cases, it may take up to 3 months (90 days) or longer for antibodies to reach detectable levels.
Another type of test is the antigen test, which detects the presence of HIV antigens, proteins produced by the virus itself. This test can detect HIV infection earlier than the antibody test, usually within 2 to 6 weeks (14 to 42 days) after exposure. However, it is less commonly used than the antibody test.
There is also the nucleic acid test (NAT), which directly detects the genetic material of the virus (RNA). This test is the most sensitive and can detect HIV infection within 1 to 4 weeks (7 to 28 days) after exposure.
