The Lagos State Government has announced that the construction of an international airport in the Lekki area is progressing smoothly, with no litigation currently hindering the process.
According to Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, all required documents have been submitted to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, paving the way for the Lagos Airport project to commence.
The Federal Government officially approved the airport’s construction on October 10, 2022, with plans for the facility to accommodate around five million passengers annually from the Lekki, Ajah, and Epe axis upon completion.
However, there were threats that legal tussles could halt the project due to a purported agreement with Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited. But Omotoso has reiterated that this matter is being addressed.
He emphasized that the focus remains on advancing the project as a top priority for the state’s ambitious 2024 budget of N2.2 trillion.
In an interview with Punch, Omotoso confirmed that funding will be sourced through a public-private partnership, ensuring that private investors play a significant role in financing the project.
“I am confident there are no legal obstacles in our way. The Federal Government has given its approval, and we have completed all necessary agreements with the federal airport authority,” he stated.
The commissioner also noted the enthusiasm among several investors interested in the Lagos Airport project. He explained that while timelines for completion may vary based on funding logistics, the site has already been identified in the Aiyetoro region.
He stressed that Governor Sanwo-Olu remains committed to making the Lekki International Airport a reality by the end of his tenure.
