The Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has said legislative oversight is critical for democracy to flourish.
Senator Jibrin said the oversight function of the legislature ensures accountability, transparency and effective use of public resources.
The Deputy Senate President stated this on Monday while speaking at the 7th Annual Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable and the 75th Posthumous Birthday of the late former Governor of Oyo State at the University of Ibadan.
The event with the theme “Legislative Oversight in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects” was organized by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation (SAAF) in collaboration with the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies.
He explained that through legislative oversight function, the National Assembly investigates government activities, evaluates policies and monitors the implementation of programmes.
“Legislative oversight is fundamental to democratic governance as it ensures accountability, transparency, and the necessary checks and balances that enhance the effective use of public funds.
“As the watchdog of government, the National Assembly plays a pivotal role in holding the executive accountable and ensuring that public resources are utilized for the benefit of the people.
“Through oversight functions, we investigate government activities, evaluate policies, and monitor the implementation of programs to ensure funds are appropriately and effectively used,” he said.
The Kano North Senator assured that the 10th Assembly remained committed to fulfilling its mandate while “welcoming constructive criticism to help us improve“.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker commended the SAAF for keeping the legacy of Senator Abiola Ajimobi alive and for creating a platform to discuss issues that shape the destiny of the nation.
“Let us all continue to work together, guided by principles of integrity, accountability and service to the people,” he added.
