Senators representing Kwara South and Kogi West districts, Oyelola Ashiru and Sunday Karimi, respectively, have said the Senate cannot stop the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, from carrying out demolition in the capital city.
Naija News reported that Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Uduaghan, in a motion, during Thursday plenary, called on the Red Chamber to halt Wike from demolishing Ogbebor Estate that reportedly belonged to the first officer commissioned into the Nigeria Army, Colonel Paul Osa Ogbebor (rtd).
While speaking on the motion, Kwara South lawmaker, Ashiru, backed Wike’s demolition exercise in the capital city. He explained that Abuja must be returned to a modern city.
He noted that the demolitions embarked on by Wike make FCT look good. “We cannot stop the minister from doing his work; he is cleaning the city and making it look good. The idea of demolishing is to make the city’ look good, we cannot stop him from doing his work.
“Yes, we can’t stop him from doing his work, This city must look good. It must be a modern city. So let’s restrict ourselves to the motion of demolition of this estate,” Ashiru said.
On his part, Kogi West lawmaker, Karimi, called for further investigation. He advised the Senate to invite the FCT Minister before reaching a decision.
“There is a need for an investigation into this matter before giving any directives. We must hear from the minister. We have to hear before we say stop demolishing. So let’s hear from the Minister first. We need to hear from the Minister,” Karimi stated.
