Arsenal legend Paul Merson has highlighted that the Gunners have a genuine opportunity in the Premier League title race this season, provided they can maintain the fitness of their key players.
Merson believes that while Chelsea may not be in contention for the Premier League title, they have the potential to secure a top-four finish this season.
Currently, both Chelsea and Arsenal hold second and third positions on the Premier League table, respectively, trailing leaders Liverpool by seven points after the Reds dropped two points in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Discussing Arsenal’s prospects for the championship, Merson shared on Sky Sports News: “If they can field their strongest lineup, like when they faced West Ham, they certainly have a chance to compete for the title. The squad that played against Sporting was their best.”
He further remarked, “A few weeks ago, I mentioned that the gap needed to close down to six points before it could widen to twelve. Right now, it stands at seven.”
Merson acknowledged that both Liverpool and Arsenal face challenging fixtures this weekend but emphasized the importance of Arsenal remaining competitive and keeping their squad healthy. “With Odegaard back in the lineup, the team looks significantly stronger,” he noted.
Regarding Chelsea’s situation, Merson remarked, “It’s important to build a solid foundation before aiming for the top. They’re developing a young team that is currently flying under the radar.”
He added, “If Chelsea can secure a top-four finish and win a trophy, such as the Europa Conference League, that would be a successful season. At the start of the season, the focus was on breaking into the top four, and they are still on track for that goal.”
Meanwhile, former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf identified Liverpool and Arsenal as the two clubs most likely to clinch the Premier League title this season. Liverpool are leading the Premier League standings, holding a seven-point advantage over Chelsea and Arsenal.
Despite their draw against Newcastle United, Leboeuf believes that only Arsenal and Liverpool are true contenders for the title, noting that Manchester City appear to be experiencing challenges and Chelsea are relying on a developing squad.
“In the title race, I still see Arsenal and Liverpool as front runners,” Leboeuf commented during an interview with ESPN FC. “I think Manchester City is going to face difficulties, and I don’t see Chelsea as contenders. My focus remains on Arsenal and Liverpool.”
He added, “Arsenal has shown resilience, and if Liverpool begins to drop points, they could quickly be back in the running.”
On Chelsea, Leboeuf expressed cautious optimism, stating, “They still have a young squad, and while they have tremendous potential, the confidence of inexperienced players can be fragile.”
