Early life and Education

Rena Wakama was born on April 11, 1992 in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA from a Nigerian parents Johnson Wakama and Rosana Oba who are from Okrika, Rivers States. She has a Bachelor degree in Therapeutic recreaction at Western Carolina University.

Basketball career

Wakama started playing basketball at a young age and spent four season with the “Catamounts”, Western Carolina Universitiy Women’s basketball team. Rena Wakama competed in the FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup with Nigeria’ First Bank team and won the bronze medal with D’Tigress in 2015 Afrobasket in Cameroon.

Coaching career

Rena Wakama started his coaching career at Manathan College with an assistant role in his third year after spending two years as the Women’s basketball team’s director of operations. She gained experience with the team before being appointed Nigeria’s D’Tigress head coach in 2023.

So far, she led Nigeria to a record sixth Afrobasket title being the first-ever woman coach to win the tournament. Furthermore, Rena Wakama led D’Tigress to their first Olympics win (75-62 vs Australia) in 20 years being the first-ever woman to coch the team at the Olympics reaching the competition’s quarter-finals which is the first time for an African country. Rena is generational.
