The House of Representatives, on Thursday, urged the federal government to adopt the use of renewable energies in ministries, departments and agencies.

The House’s resolution followed a motion moved by the Honourable Esosa Iyawe, representing Oredo Federal Constituency, Edo State.

The motion titled ‘The Need for Utilisation of Renewable Energy in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of the Federal Government’, was in response to unstable electricity affecting the country and national grid collapse.

Esosa, in his presentation, stated that about 60 gigawatts of electricity are obtainable from renewable energy sources. He explained that such an amount of energy source, when harnessed, would lead to industrialization to a very large extent.

He expressed concern that “in the midst of failing economy, Nigeria faces serious energy crisis, with many of the power plants in government facilities dilapidated, obsolete, unreliable and in the state of disrepair despite huge amounts budgeted annually for maintenance“.

Iyawe added that using diesel generators not only elevates operational costs and derains the nation’s financial resources, but contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.

The House, therefore, resolved to “urge the Federal Government to immediately adopt the use of renewable energy solutions in its Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in order to reduce the expenditure on energy in the country’s annual Budget;

“Urge ALL Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to patronize Renewable Energy Developers Association of Nigeria for procurement.

“Mandate the Committee on Renewable Energy to ensure implementation.”
