Senate Makes Key Changes As Committee, AGF Meet To Review Tax Reform Bills Today

The Nigerian Senate is set to examine the contentious Tax Reform Bills today in collaboration with the Attorney General of the Federation.

Naija News reports that this development follows the decision of the lawmakers during plenary on Wednesday led by Deputy Senate President Senator Jibrin Barau to halt further proceedings on the tax reform bill.

Senator Barau indicated that the Attorney General would engage with the committee to ensure that all stakeholders have the opportunity to express their views, leading to a reasoned conclusion from the discussions.

The review is scheduled to occur in Abuja on Thursday, December 5.

Replacement Of Committee Member

However, the Senate, at the beginning of the plenary session on Thursday, appointed Senator Kaka Shehu (Borno Central) to replace Senator Tahir Mungono (APC, Borno North) as the representative for the North East geo-political zone in the committee that is set to convene with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) on Thursday.

Naija News reports that the 10-member committee earlier set up by the Senate is tasked with engaging the AGF to clarify the contentious aspects of the tax reform bills that have sparked opposition.

However, on Thursday, the Senate determined that only committee members, excluding principal officers of the chamber, would participate in the meeting.

The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) in his submission during plenary, however, said Senator Moro was made chairman of the committee “to ensure transparency.”

The resolutions were reached when Senate President Godswill Akpabio subjected the debate to a voice vote and later hit the gavel saying, “‘the ‘ayes’ have it.”
