Italian Serie A giants, AC Milan have announced the appointment of former Porto manager Sergio Conceicao as their new head coach.
Sergio Conceicao’s appointment comes in the wake of the club’s recent decision to part ways with Paulo Fonseca after a disappointing start to the season.
Conceicao, a well-respected figure in the football community, is no stranger to success. The 50-year-old has built an impressive resume, having secured 11 major trophies during his six-year tenure at Porto, which he ended last season.
With his extensive experience as a player for renowned clubs such as Lazio, Inter Milan, and Parma, he brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the prestigious San Siro.
Under the terms of his new contract, Conceicao will lead the team for the next 18 months. His first test as head coach will be on January 3, when AC Milan face off against their historic rivals, Juventus, in the semi-finals of the Italian Super Cup.
This particular match is set to be especially poignant for Conceicao, as he will be competing against his son, Francisco, who plays for the Juventus side.
Milan’s decision to dismiss Fonseca on Monday morning came shortly after a frustrating 1-1 draw at home against Roma.
This result left the iconic seven-time European champions languishing in eighth place in the Serie A standings, a staggering 14 points behind the joint-leaders Atalanta and Napoli, a situation that demanded a change in leadership.
Fonseca had joined AC Milan in June, taking over from Stefano Pioli, who had led the team to a remarkable second-place finish in the league last season, as well as securing the club’s first league title in 11 years in 2022.
