A pharmacist has shared his top tips on helping to combat painful arthritis symptoms. Some 10 million people in the UK have arthritis, according to the NHS. The condition causes pain and stiffness in the joints, sometimes making it hard to move around.

While there isn’t a cure for arthritis, there are ways to reduce the chances of it developing and to help with the pain. Pharmacist Mark Burdon, who has done research into pain in joints and muscles, said: “Diet has an impact on arthritic pain through an effect on inflammation.”

Mark suggests following the Mediterranean diet to help stop inflammation. He explained: “An anti-inflammatory diet reduces inflammatory markers in the blood and can reduce pain.” He also said that eating like this has been proven to lower inflammation because of how it works in the body, reports GloucestershireLive.

Mark also mentioned: “A healthy anti-inflammatory diet also contributes to the ability to maintain a healthy weight.” He warned that having too much fat, especially around your belly, can cause inflammation, so it’s good to keep your weight healthy.

The Mediterranean diet includes lots of good fats, whole grains, fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, and seeds. It is often recommended by health experts for conditions like heart disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Mark said: “Anti-inflammatory foods for arthritic and joint pain include colourful vegetables and fruits, live yoghurt and other fermented foods, beans, pulses, oily fish, extra virgin olive oil with moderate amounts of high protein foods such as poultry, cheese, eggs, nuts and seeds and small amounts of lean red meat with sweet foods eaten only occasionally.”

A medical study in the Clinical Nutrition journal in 2020 supported his advice. The study looked at the effects of following a Mediterranean diet for four years on over 4,000 people.

It found: “Higher adherence to Mediterranean diet is associated with a lower risk of pain worsening and symptomatic forms of knee osteoarthritis. Adherence to a Mediterranean diet has been shown to be linked with reduced inflammation through the same mechanism.”

“Too much fatty tissue especially around the stomach releases inflammatory mediators causing inflammation so it’s important to maintain weight in the healthy range.”

Another study in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases showed that a Mediterranean diet could help ease symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. The study stated: “The results indicate that patients with rheumatoid arthritis, by adjusting to a Mediterranean diet, did obtain a reduction in inflammatory activity, an increase in physical function, and improved vitality.”

Mark also warned about eating certain foods if you have or are at risk of getting arthritis. He said: “Highly processed food high in saturated fat and sugar, increases inflammation and may increase the risk of arthritic pain.”
