Electricity is important in all aspects of human life, and in every nation, it is used in our homes, work places, hospitals, and even in industries.

So many ways have been devised by humans to generate electricity, and these range from windmills to nuclear power plants and the use of dams. In this article, I want to show you the 53-year-old Kainji Dam in Niger State that produces electricity for Nigeria.

It was built across the Niger River in Niger State, central Nigeria, and its construction began in 1964 by an Italian engineering company called Impregilo. The project was completed in 1968 and cost about $209 million.

It was constructed to generate about 960 megawatts, but only 8 of its 12 turbines were installed, and this reduced its capacity to 760 megawatts. In addition, the dam produces electricity for most cities in Nigeria.

It was opened on February 15th, 1969 by General Yakubu Gowon, and since then, it has provided electricity and water for domestic and industrial use, and has greatly helped in reducing and preventing floods>>>CONTINUE FULL READING HERE
