The Nigerian Army has arrested a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, Baka Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, believed to be responsible for the murder of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Mohammad Bawa, in Sokoto State.

Troops from the 1 Brigade apprehended Wurgi on December 14 during an operation in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State.

Acting on intelligence reports, the soldiers discovered Wurgi was receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in a clash with a rival group.

Sources revealed to Zagazola Makama, a Counter Insurency Expert and Security Analysts in the Lake Chad region, that Wurgi was transported to the hospital with multiple cuts and gunshot wounds.

During the operation, two of his accomplices escaped, but another individual involved in transporting the suspect via a tricycle was captured.

Recall that the late Emir of Gobir was abducted on July 9, 2024, in Sabon Birnin Local Government Area of Sokoto State. He was murdered on August 22 after failed ransom negotiations involving cash and motorcycles.

Wurgi, an arms smuggler with international ties, allegedly played a central role in the Emir’s abduction and killing.

He is also said to have close family ties to Bello Turji, another notorious bandit leader, through his grandfather.

Wurgi’s son, Sani Duna, is believed to serve as a getaway biker for Turji, further exposing the familial connections within the banditry network.

This arrest represents a critical breakthrough in the ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry in Northwest Nigeria.

Wurgi is being held at an undisclosed location as authorities intensify efforts to track down his fleeing accomplices.

Residents across Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states have commended the military’s operation, expressing optimism that this development will help curb the wave of banditry and violence plaguing the region.
