The Oronsaye panel, which was set up by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, was tasked with reviewing the structure and operations of government agencies, parastatals, and commissions.
The panel submitted its report in 2014, recommending the abolition and merger of several agencies to reduce the cost of governance and improve service delivery.
According to the report, Nigeria has over 541 government parastatals, commissions, and agencies, many of which have overlapping functions and responsibilities.
The panel’s recommendations include the abolition of 12 agencies and the merging of 38 others.
Some of the agencies and parastatals that will be affected by the implementation of the report include the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC), and the National Sports Commission (NSC).
President Tinubu’s decision to implement the report has been met with mixed reactions.
Supporters of the move argue that it will help reduce the cost of governance and improve the efficiency of government operations. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the potential impact on jobs and service delivery.
In response to these concerns, the government has stated that the restructuring will be carried out in a manner that ensures the protection of jobs and the continued provision of essential services to the public.
