A government storage facility located in Gwagwa town, within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), experienced a significant security breach on Sunday morning as a large crowd of youths forcefully entered the warehouse and looted substantial quantities of food items. The looting spree reportedly went unchecked for approximately two hours, until about 9 am, drawing individuals from the nearby towns of Jiwa and Karmo. This influx exacerbated the situation, leading to considerable traffic congestion along the Gwagwa-Karmo road, which links to the Dei-Dei and Jabi axes.
Jaafar Aminu, a local resident who sustained bruises during the turmoil, depicted the scene as one of desperation, with people from different areas converging on the site in hopes of participating in the looting. Another resident, Christopher Agbo, highlighted the indiscriminate nature of the looters, who took not only food items but also other materials they found useful, including protectors originally installed to secure the site.
This recent looting marks the second time the warehouse has been targeted, with a similar incident occurring during the Covid-19 lockdown when grains and pumping machines, meant for relief efforts, were stolen.
Following the raid on the government facility, the mob moved on to Idu Industrial Estate, where they targeted additional warehouses owned by both individuals and the government. At the time of reporting, there was a notable lack of security personnel present at the scene.
