Mazi Uche Mefor, the convener of the Biafra group, revealed this development to Vanguard during discussions surrounding the complexities surrounding the composition of the Biafra map.
Mefor emphasized that the call for the redrawing of the Biafra map stemmed from the perceived marginalization of the Southeast region by other states within Nigeria. He highlighted the importance of allowing each component of the former Biafra Republic to pursue its path to emancipation independently.
In his statement, Mefor stressed the principle of voluntary association, stating, “There was no need to impose the Biafra ideology on unwilling partners.” He advocated for an alliance based on mutual consent rather than coercion.
Addressing recent challenges and the reluctance of some former components of Biafra to collaborate in the restoration efforts, Mefor asserted that each component should be free to pursue its self-determination aspirations autonomously. He suggested that the redrawn Biafra map would allow various ethnic groups, including Igbo, Ijaw, Efik, Ibibio, and Anang, to pursue their distinct paths towards self-determination.
Mefor affirmed that the territory of present-day Southeast Nigeria remains the homeland of Igbo-Biafra, while acknowledging the presence of displaced Igbo communities in other regions due to historical boundary alterations.
