The herbal concoction, known as Coco Samba, has been discovered to contain excessive amounts of sildenafil, a drug commonly used to enhance sexual stimulation.

This revelation came to light after German customs intercepted a batch of Coco Samba and subjected it to analysis by the German Official Medicines Control Laboratory (OMCL).

The findings revealed that the product contained an alarming concentration of sildenafil, far exceeding the approved dosage.

Specifically, the analysis indicated that 100 ml of Coco Samba contained more sildenafil than deemed safe for consumption.

In response to these findings, NAFDAC conducted its own laboratory analysis, which confirmed the presence of undisclosed sildenafil content in Coco Samba.

Sildenafil is a medication typically prescribed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

However, when consumed in excessive amounts, it can lead to severe health complications, especially when combined with other medications, such as nitrates.

Of particular concern is the potential interaction between sildenafil and nitrates, which are commonly found in prescription drugs used to treat conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease.

When sildenafil interacts with nitrates, it can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure, posing a significant risk to individuals with underlying health issues.

Given the widespread availability of Coco Samba in the market, NAFDAC deemed it necessary to issue a public notice to alert consumers to the dangers associated with the product.

The agency emphasized that individuals who are most likely to use Coco Samba, particularly adult males seeking to enhance their sexual performance, are also the most vulnerable to the adverse effects of sildenafil.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, FIJ reported earlier this week that NAFDAC had imposed a ban on the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of alcohol in sachets, PET bottles, and glass bottles with a capacity of 200 ml and below.

Despite this regulatory intervention, FIJ’s investigations revealed that such products continued to be sold freely in Lagos, raising concerns about enforcement of regulatory measures.READ  FULL CONTENT
