BREAKING: Iran suspends and fines its international goalkeeper after he hugged a woman at the end of a match

The daily ‘Khabar Varzeshi’ reports that Hossein Hosseini, who has 11 caps for Iran, was suspended for one match and fined 4,400 euros for “misbehaving towards the match security officers”.

Khodayari, known as the “blue girl” after the colours of her team, Esteghlal, spent two days in Gharchak jail for this and was released pending trial, but, when she learned she could face a six-month jail sentence, she set herself on fire.

After suffering burns to 90 percent of her body, the young woman died in a Tehran hospital on 9 September 2019 and her death, in addition to making her a symbol of the struggle for equality, provoked numerous reactions, including from FIFA.
