According to a report by The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, US President Donald Trump has claimed that American forces discovered what he described as a “gift from China” aboard a seized vessel linked to Iran, amid heightened tensions over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking during an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, Trump said US authorities intercepted a ship allegedly carrying unspecified equipment while attempting to move toward Iranian territory during what he described as a broader enforcement action involving Iranian-linked maritime activity.
“We caught a ship yesterday that had some things on it, which wasn’t very nice. A gift from China perhaps, I don’t know, but I was a little surprised,” Trump said.
The White House did not immediately respond to media requests for clarification regarding the president’s comments, according to Bloomberg.
In response, the Chinese Embassy in Washington stated that its country’s export controls are strictly regulated. The embassy told Bloomberg that China’s trade in military and dual-use technologies is managed “prudently and responsibly,” with formal oversight procedures in place.
The latest remarks come amid ongoing geopolitical friction involving the United States, Iran, and global powers accused of indirect involvement in regional security dynamics. Bloomberg noted that both Russia and China have previously been linked to forms of support for Iran during periods of heightened conflict, though the extent and nature of that support differ.
Separate reporting by Financial Times alleged that Iran acquired advanced satellite capabilities from China, including a reconnaissance satellite reportedly integrated into Iran’s military intelligence network. The report claimed the system could enhance surveillance and targeting capacity across the Middle East, though the details have not been independently verified by US authorities.
Meanwhile, CNN reported that US intelligence assessments suggested China had considered or prepared to supply Iran with air defence equipment, including portable anti-aircraft missile systems known as MANPADS. These systems are designed to target low-flying aircraft and are considered particularly dangerous in asymmetric warfare environments.
According to the report, such systems could pose risks to US and allied air operations in the region if tensions were to escalate again after any ceasefire breakdown.
Trump has repeatedly warned against foreign military assistance to Iran. Following a recent ceasefire agreement, he stated that countries supplying weapons or support to Tehran could face severe economic penalties, including tariffs on trade with the United States.
He said any such action would be met with a “50% tariff on all commerce with the United States,” framing it as part of efforts to deter external involvement in the conflict.
