According to a report by Anadolu Agency published on April 28, 2026, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced the recovery of more than 15 unexploded U.S.-manufactured munitions from multiple locations, including Hormozgan Province in southern Iran.
In statements attributed to the IRGC, the recovered devices were described as heavy precision weapons, including ordnance linked to the GBU and BLU series. These types of munitions are widely recognized as advanced precision-guided bombs commonly deployed in modern military operations. Iranian authorities indicated that the weapons were discovered unexploded and have since been transferred to specialized technical and research facilities for further examination.
The IRGC noted that the materials are currently undergoing what it referred to as “technical analysis and reverse engineering purposes.” However, there has been no independent verification of these claims. Officials also did not clarify the circumstances surrounding the discovery, leaving unanswered questions about whether the munitions are connected to a recent incident or are remnants of earlier, unexploded stock.
Military experts highlight that the GBU series encompasses a range of guided bomb units designed for targeting fortified or underground structures, while BLU-series munitions are typically associated with bunker-penetrating capabilities. Among the variants reportedly identified by Iranian sources is the GBU-57, a powerful penetrator intended for striking deeply buried facilities.
Despite the significance of the announcement, Iranian authorities have not released any visual evidence to support the claims. Additionally, there has been no immediate response from U.S. defense officials regarding the report.
The development comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension across the Middle East, where disputes over military activity continue to intensify. Iranian officials have previously accused foreign powers of conducting operations within or near its territory, allegations that Western governments have consistently denied.
