According to report by The Cable on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has expressed confidence that the party will overcome Rabiu Kwankwaso politically in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ganduje made this known during an interview with BBC News Hausa on Monday, where he spoke extensively about the political atmosphere in Kano and the ongoing rivalry between major political actors in the state.
He described Kano as a highly strategic political base in Nigeria, stressing that the APC is working to consolidate its strength and expand its influence in the state before the next general election.
According to him, the party is also optimistic that it will receive political cooperation from Governor Abba Yusuf in achieving its broader objectives in Kano.
During the interview, Ganduje also reacted to Kwankwaso’s recent political realignment, particularly his move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on March 30, alongside other prominent opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
He argued that Kwankwaso’s frequent shifts between political parties reflect what he described as a declining political relevance, suggesting that the former governor is constantly searching for a platform to remain politically visible.
Ganduje maintained that the APC remains stronger due to its nationwide structure, political spread, and control of several state governments. He added that the ruling party continues to attract influential politicians from opposition camps, which further strengthens its position ahead of future elections.
He also referenced the 2023 governorship election in Kano, which the APC lost to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), noting that the party challenged the outcome in court.
According to him, two lower courts initially ruled in favour of the APC before the case eventually reached the Supreme Court, which delivered a final judgment against the party. Ganduje said the APC respected the ruling and moved on despite the disappointment.
Reflecting on the legal battle, he stated: “We did not win the last election. We took the case to court, where two courts affirmed our victory, but the Supreme Court ultimately decided against us. We accepted that as God’s will.”
He concluded that despite past setbacks, the APC remains focused, united, and determined to reclaim political dominance in Kano and across Nigeria.
