Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has condemned the extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old musician, Oghenemine Ogidi, by a police officer in Effurun.
Oborevwori, in a statement issued on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, said he received the news of the killing with deep shock, stressing that no citizen deserved to be subjected to such brutality.
He described it as a barbaric act and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life.
“The killing of Mena Ogidi by ASP Nuhu Usman is unwarranted, unprovoked and barbaric. It is unlawful and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life,” the governor said.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, reaffirming that the safety and dignity of every citizen remained paramount under his administration.
“No citizen deserves to be subjected to such brutality and death. The protection of lives remains paramount under my administration,” he said.
The governor commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for the swift and decisive disciplinary actions taken, including the approval for dismissal and prosecution of the officers found culpable, a decision forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
He assured that the state government would closely monitor the case to its conclusion, support the family of the deceased, and remain committed to upholding the rule of law and promoting a just and humane Delta State.
PUNCHONLINE reports that the incident had occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun received intelligence about Ogidi, who was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
