According to a report by Fox News on Thursday, April 30, 2026, a heated exchange has erupted in Washington after U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth strongly rebuked Democratic Congressman John Garamendi over comments on the ongoing Iran conflict.
The confrontation followed Garamendi’s description of the situation in Iran as a “quagmire,” a term often used to describe a difficult and unwinnable war.
Hegseth sharply disagreed.
Speaking during the exchange, he accused the lawmaker of undermining U.S. troops just two months into the mission. He said it was too early to label the conflict in such negative terms.
“The way you stain the troops when you tell them two months in — you should know better,” Hegseth said. “Shame on you.”
He questioned Garamendi’s stance, asking who he was supporting in the conflict.
“Who are you cheering for? Who are you pulling for?” he asked.
Hegseth went on to defend American forces, praising their performance on the battlefield. According to him, U.S. troops have achieved significant success since the operation began.
“Our troops are doing incredible work,” he said. “They have achieved incredible battlefield successes.”
He also criticized the congressman for discussing the issue publicly, suggesting such comments could weaken support for the mission.
Hegseth further claimed that political opposition to Donald Trump was influencing the criticism.
“Your hatred for President Trump blinds you,” he added.
The exchange has drawn attention online, highlighting growing political divisions in the United States over the handling of the Iran conflict.
A correction was later issued clarifying that Hegseth’s remarks were directed at Garamendi, not Republican Congressman Rob Wittman, as earlier reported.
