According to the Nigerian Tribune, former Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s internal security situation, stating that the country is witnessing notable improvements as a result of sustained military operations against criminal and insurgent groups.
Buratai made the remarks in a statement released to journalists in Kaduna on Sunday, May 31, 2026, as part of reflections marking the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Assessing the government’s security efforts, the retired army general noted that the Nigerian Armed Forces have intensified operations across several regions facing security threats. He explained that troops have continued to carry out targeted missions aimed at addressing terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality affecting different parts of the country.
According to him, these coordinated military actions have produced visible results, contributing to improved public safety and strengthening Nigeria’s overall security architecture. He emphasized that security personnel have maintained an active presence in key operational areas, helping to restore order in communities previously troubled by violence and instability.
Buratai further stated that the military’s current activities form part of a broader national security strategy focused on counterterrorism campaigns, anti-banditry operations, and other internal security initiatives being implemented across the nation’s geopolitical zones. These efforts, he said, are designed to neutralize remaining threats while creating a safer environment for citizens.
He added that by maintaining sustained pressure on criminal networks and insurgent elements, the armed forces have limited their operational capacity and prevented them from regrouping in many affected areas.
Commenting on governance, Buratai praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for what he described as bold and decisive measures aimed at addressing long-standing national challenges. He argued that the government’s policy decisions demonstrate a commitment to reform, national development, and institutional strengthening.
Drawing from his extensive experience in military leadership and diplomacy, including his service as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Buratai said he possesses a broad understanding of both domestic and regional security realities. This perspective, he noted, informs his confidence in the country’s current security trajectory.
He stressed, however, that sustaining progress will require a combination of effective military operations, sound strategic planning, and continuous collaboration between federal and state authorities. According to him, security institutions are now focused on consolidating gains already achieved and ensuring that peace and stability become permanent features in affected communities.
In conclusion, Buratai commended President Tinubu’s leadership over the past three years, arguing that the administration has initiated significant changes capable of transforming the country’s future.
“You have not only made history,” Buratai said, “but you have broken a long-standing cycle that held our nation back for too long in critical areas of national life and development.”
