According to a report by Vanguard on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, a prominent figure within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has called on the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to consider former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as his potential running mate ahead of the 2027 general election.
Eze argued that Amaechi’s extensive political background, national visibility, and involvement in past electoral strategies make him a strong candidate for the vice-presidential position. According to him, the former minister and ex-governor possesses the kind of experience required to strengthen the party’s chances in a highly competitive presidential race.
He pointed specifically to Amaechi’s role in Nigeria’s 2015 political transition, suggesting that his organisational strength and campaign influence were instrumental in the opposition’s victory at the time. Eze maintained that such political leverage could prove valuable once again in shaping the outcome of the 2027 elections.
“You need Amaechi at this stage,” he said, adding that his political track record shows he is not a figure that any serious presidential contender can easily overlook. He described Amaechi as someone with the capacity to mobilise support across different regions and political blocs.
The ADC chieftain further noted that various recommendations have been made regarding possible running mates, but insisted that Amaechi stands out due to his structure, experience, and established network within Nigeria’s political landscape. He warned that overlooking such a figure could create internal dissatisfaction within the party and potentially weaken its electoral cohesion.
“If Amaechi is not selected, it may have consequences for the unity of our shared political vision,” Eze cautioned.
In the same statement released on Wednesday, Eze also commended Atiku for what he described as efforts to strengthen unity within the party following its presidential primary. He praised the candidate’s outreach to former rivals as a demonstration of political maturity and inclusiveness.
He highlighted Atiku’s recent engagements with key figures who contested the party’s ticket, noting that such reconciliatory moves reflect a commitment to building consensus and maintaining internal stability.
“By reaching out to Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and other contenders, you have shown a willingness to work as a team,” Eze stated.
Eze concluded that Atiku’s emergence as the ADC presidential flagbearer reflects his long-standing involvement in Nigeria’s democratic process. He expressed optimism that the candidate’s experience in governance and politics could offer direction and stability if supported by a strong and well-balanced campaign structure ahead of 2027.
