Tensions escalated in Kano on Friday as security operatives blocked the palace of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, preventing him from attending a royal ceremony in Bichi Local Government Area.
Emir Sanusi II was scheduled to preside over the presentation of a staff of office to a newly appointed District Head in Bichi.
However, heavily armed security personnel, including Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), were deployed to the palace gates, effectively barring his movement.
According to the Daily Post, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II is scheduled to accompany the newly appointed Wamban Kano, Munir Sanusi, to his official district posting in Bichi.
The incident comes in the wake of recent developments in Kano’s traditional leadership.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had reinstated Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, overturning his controversial deposition in 2020 by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
Ganduje’s administration had elevated Aminu Ado Bayero to the position, creating deep divisions within the Emirate.
Governor Yusuf’s decision to reinstate Sanusi II has reignited tensions between factions loyal to the two Emirs. Friday’s blockade appears to reflect the ongoing friction.
The Kano Emirate crisis has polarized traditional institutions in the state, with supporters of Sanusi II and Ado Bayero at loggerheads.
Sanusi’s reinstatement effectively reversed Ganduje’s restructuring of Kano’s traditional leadership and has fueled power struggles within the Emirate system.
