According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, former lawmaker and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dino Melaye, has called on President Bola Tinubu to publicly explain the circumstances surrounding the removal of the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had on Tuesday announced a cabinet reshuffle that led to the exit of Edun from his position as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. He was subsequently replaced by Taiwo Oyedele, while the presidency did not provide an official reason for the change.
The lack of explanation has since triggered reactions from political figures and commentators, with Melaye questioning the transparency of the decision and suggesting that Nigerians deserve clarity on the circumstances behind the dismissal.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page, Melaye argued that in more transparent democracies, governments are expected to provide reasons whenever top officials are removed from office, particularly in sensitive ministries such as finance.
He raised concerns over what he described as alleged large-scale financial mismanagement, asking whether the minister’s removal was linked to an inability to address or conceal alleged financial irregularities within the system.
“Mr President, when Ministers are sacked in civilised climes, the government must explain why they are sacked,” Melaye wrote.
He further alleged that the decision could be connected to claims involving significant revenue diversion, referencing figures circulating in public discourse.
“Was the Minister of Finance removed because he could not cover up the stolen 24 billion dollars (34 trillion naira) diverted from our revenue? World Bank no dey lie,” he added.
His remarks have added to growing political debate following the sudden cabinet reshuffle, which has drawn attention due to the strategic importance of the finance ministry in Nigeria’s economic management.
The Ministry of Finance plays a central role in fiscal policy, budgeting, revenue generation, and economic coordination, making any leadership change within the ministry a subject of significant national interest.
While the federal government has yet to respond to the allegations or provide detailed reasons for the ministerial change, the development has continued to generate reactions across political circles and social media platforms.
