The curtain will fall on one of the most dramatic seasons in the history of the Nigeria Premier Football League this Sunday, with all 10 final-day fixtures kicking off simultaneously in a nerve-racking climax that could reshape the title race, decide continental qualification, and settle the survival battle.
Although Enugu Rangers and Rivers United have already secured Nigeria’s two CAF Champions League tickets, the fight for the remaining continental slot in the CAF Confederation Cup remains delicately balanced between Shooting Stars and Ikorodu City.
Shooting Stars hold the advantage going into the decisive fixtures, sitting third on 60 points, two ahead of Ikorodu City on 58. The Ibadan club needs only to avoid defeat away to Niger Tornadoes to secure a return to continental football.
But Ikorodu City still have hope. The Lagos-based side must beat title-chasing Rangers and pray Shooting Stars falter in Minna to snatch third place dramatically.
The showdown in Lagos is expected to be among the most explosive matches of the season finale, with Rangers chasing the league crown while Ikorodu City pursue a historic first continental qualification.
For Ikorodu City, the occasion also revives painful memories from last season when their continental ambitions collapsed on the final day. A crushing 4-1 defeat to eventual champions Remo Stars in Ikenne denied them third place, despite taking an early lead, before their Federation Cup hopes ended in a penalty shootout heartbreak against Abakaliki FC in the semi-finals.
Now, fortune has handed them another chance.
At the top of the table, Rangers lead the standings with 65 points, just one ahead of Rivers United on 64 after a dramatic Matchday 37 twist kept the title race alive.
For much of matchday 37, Rangers appeared to be cruising toward the championship while Rivers United trailed Wikki Tourists in Bauchi. But Rivers fought back from behind twice before Taofeek Otaniyi struck a late winner in an electrifying 3-2 victory that reduced Rangers’ advantage to a single point heading into the final day.
Rangers, the only NPFL club never to have suffered relegation, defeated Bendel Insurance 2-1 in Enugu thanks to a brace from Godwin Obaje, while Rivers United will host Katsina United, knowing victory could yet deliver the title if Rangers stumble in Lagos.
Elsewhere, survival battles and pride contests add further intrigue to the closing round.
Former champions Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists have already been relegated after costly Matchday 37 defeats. Bayelsa United lost 2-1 to Remo Stars in Ikenne despite taking an early lead through Ofem Nneoyi, while Wikki Tourists twice led against Rivers United before collapsing to defeat in Bauchi.
Their demotion leaves several clubs battling to avoid joining them in the drop zone scramble, with tension expected across venues from Warri to Minna and from Jos to Aba.
Among the key fixtures, Kano Pillars visit Plateau United after boosting their survival hopes with a crucial win over Warri Wolves, while Kun Khalifat host relegated Wikki Tourists seeking the points needed to complete a remarkable escape.
Defending Federation Cup holders Kwara United travel to Yenagoa to face Bayelsa United, while Enyimba confront El-Kanemi Warriors in Aba, hoping to salvage pride from an underwhelming campaign.
The complete final-day fixtures are:
Enyimba vs El-Kanemi Warriors
Bayelsa United vs Kwara United
Kun Khalifat vs Wikki Tourists
Bendel Insurance vs Remo Stars
Warri Wolves vs Abia Warriors
Ikorodu City vs Enugu Rangers
Plateau United vs Kano Pillars
Rivers United vs Katsina United

With the title race still alive, continental ambitions hanging in the balance, and survival anxieties lingering across the league, the NPFL appears set for one final afternoon of chaos, suspense, heartbreak, and celebration.
