A report by Daily Post on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, revealed that Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle was unexpectedly pleased with the strong unity his team displayed in their 2-0 win against Zimbabwe, indicating the players seemed to function as if they had extensive experience playing together.
Nigeria achieved an easy victory over the Warriors in the Unity Cup at The Valley, with Millwall’s winger Femi Azeez shining by netting both goals during his first international match, propelling the Super Eagles to the finals of the tournament.
Chelle started a heavily altered lineup for the match, offering starting spots to eight new players including Arthur Okonkwo, Chibueze Oputa, Obinna Igboke, and Femi Azeez, with several others making appearances from the substitutes’ bench. Although they lacked familiarity with one another, the team put forth a composed and organized effort.
After the game, Chelle expressed his admiration for how swiftly the players adapted to his tactical plans, despite having limited practice time in camp.
He mentioned that the squad only had two training sessions before the match yet still effectively implemented various tactical strategies throughout the game. He stated that the players demonstrated an understanding that was beyond what he expected, given their brief time together.
Chelle observed that the Super Eagles alternated between a 4-4-2 diamond and a 4-2-3-1 formation during the match, and the smooth switch between these tactics influenced his favorable view of the team’s display. He added that at times, it appeared as if they were a unit that had played alongside each other for months or even years.
The coach also commended Zimbabwe for their competitiveness, recognizing that the Warriors presented difficulties at certain points in the game. Nevertheless, he asserted that Nigeria’s organization and adaptability were the keys to their success, especially during critical moments.
Regardless of the experimental lineup, Chelle emphasized that the performance provided positive signs for upcoming opportunities, particularly regarding squad depth and tactical adaptability.
