BREAKING: IDF Eliminated One-Third of Hezbollah’s Prewar Forces, Spokesman Says

As the IDF grapples with emerging threats from drone warfare and the complex diplomacy surrounding the Lebanon-Israel border, a senior military spokesman announced that the Israel Defense Forces has killed approximately one-third of Hezbollah’s pre-October 2023 fighter force.

According to a report made by the Jerusalem Post on Thursday, 28 May, 2026, the Chief Spokesman of the Israel Defense Forces, Brigadier General Effie Defrin told reporters that roughly 2,500 fighters of the Lebanese Shia Islamist political party and paramilitary group which is popularly known as Hezbollah have been killed since the current round of hostilities began in March, part of a broader toll of 7,000 to 8,000 terrorists eliminated since October 8, 2023, underscoring that given that Hezbollah fielded an estimated 30,000 fighters before the war.

He also said the figure represents closing in on one-third of the group’s operational strength.

It was gathered that the latest comments of the top Israeli Defense Forces official, Defrin appeared aimed at countering growing criticism that the military and the Israeli regime, under the leadership of Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu have not done enough to protect Northern Israeli communities and troops stationed in Southern Lebanon from a new and vexing threat: first-person-view (FPV) drone attacks. Beyond the fatalities, the IDF has reported that an additional 10,000 Hezbollah operatives have been wounded during the conflict.

The IDF also emphasized that recent strikes have also targeted relatively senior Hezbollah commanders, highlighting that those eliminated include the El-Hiam regional commander, the Deputy Commander of the elite Badr unit, the intelligence Chief for the Shakif region, as well as engineering commanders and deputies in the Yohmor and Jouaiyya regions.

As it stands, despite the engineering commanders and deputies in the Yohmor and Jouaiyya regions, and tactical successes, other senior Israeli defense officials have acknowledged to the Post that a true countermeasure for FPV drones remains months or more away, as the small, agile unmanned aircraft pose a difficult targeting problem for conventional weapons.
