According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, May 29, 2026, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has warned that anybody thinking about staging a coup in the country is “wasting their time.” Musa argues that Nigerians will not tolerate or back any effort to unseat a democratically elected government by using illegal methods.
There is considerable national opposition to any disruption of civilian government, he emphasised, and the present democratic structure remains firmly in place.
Musa, in an interview that aired on Friday on Arise Television, restated his views on the superiority of democratic rule over military rule.
He emphasised that the Armed Forces are committed to protecting the nation’s democratic institutions and constitutional order, and he made the point that democracy still offers more advantages for national growth and government stability.
In addition, the minister said that he was personally involved in a prior probe into an alleged coup attempt during the interview.
The top military commanders with whom he was in the process of detecting and reporting the situation were also involved, he said.
To elaborate, he said that he oversaw the military’s investigation and examination of the purported plot as chair of the committee charged with the task.
Musa added his thoughts on the persons associated with the purported coup attempt, calling them “confused individuals” who manipulated and led subordinate officers into the incident’s web of involvement.
He pointed out that this kind of behaviour drew in less experienced troops who were enticed into the scenario by more senior members of the team, adding needless complexity to the ranks.
According to the defence minister, military members have been adequately provided for in terms of both welfare and operational capacity of the Armed Forces.
He clarified that there have been no concerns with wage payments and that further efforts are being put in place to improve allowances.
Musa further brought attention to the continuing endeavours to enhance the operational capability of the military by supplying troops with contemporary equipment to aid in tackling security concerns nationwide.
Plus, he insisted that the administration would be resilient enough to withstand any coup attempt, citing resistance from both the military and citizens who respect democratic rule as reasons.
He emphasised once again that the strength of the public opinion and the institutional framework of the military would prevent unlawful governmental transitions.
He said, “It’s quite unfortunate what they did. They had no reason to do that. The country was going very well. The armed forces have been taken care of quite very well.
We’ve never had issues with our salaries. Efforts have been made to even increase our salaries and our allowances. Our troops are doing quite very well. We’re getting more equipment to fight.
