Eko Hot Blog reports that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has confirmed that Nigerians will begin utilizing the proposed three-in-one identity card services in August this year.

This announcement follows the launch of the new card, which includes payment capabilities and social service features, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System on April 5, 2024.

The NIMC explained that the new identity solution is equipped with payment capabilities for all types of social and financial services.

An official from NIMC, speaking to Punch, stated that the commission has been working tirelessly to meet its goals and that the plan remains on track for launch in the upcoming months. The official, who remained anonymous, added that the commission has entered the testing and deployment stage.

“We initially planned for a July launch, but there have been a few delays. We are still hopeful that it will come in July or August. We are on plan, and if there is any shift, the public will be informed,” the official said.

“Deploying a new technology requires significant work. We need to configure the card, enable the outlets, and ensure the wallet functions correctly. Testing is currently ongoing,” the source continued.

“The deployment process is underway. The portal that people need to access the service is being deployed, and we must ensure it is scalable. These tasks are currently in progress.”
