The federal government has directed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and other relevant agencies within the ministry to promptly implement the recommendations from the inter-agency committee established to tackle the persistent grid collapses in the power sector.

Minister for Power, Adebayo Adelabu, issued this directive through a statement from his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media, Bolaji Tunji.

This order follows a recent disturbance in the national grid reported by TCN at approximately 11:29 AM on Thursday. Minister Adelabu emphasized the necessity for all relevant agencies to prepare for the immediate execution of the committee’s recommendations, which were submitted on Wednesday.

The recommendations of the committee are far-reaching and will provide lasting solutions to the frequent power grid collapses that we have regrettably experienced in the country

He stated, “The recommendations of the committee are far-reaching and will provide lasting solutions to the frequent power grid collapses that we have regrettably experienced in the country, both in the short and long term.”

In the meantime, the federal government, via the National Orientation Agency (NOA), has linked the recurrent collapses of the national grid, which lead to nationwide blackouts, to the failure of electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to effectively utilize the power generated. The NOA noted that while Nigeria has the capacity to generate approximately 13,000 MW of electricity and transmit up to 8,000 MW, the inadequate infrastructure of DisCos results in systemic failures.

The agency highlighted that with the recent addition of the 700 MW Zungeru hydroelectric plant, Nigeria’s national grid now boasts an installed power generation capacity of about 13,610 MW. However, despite this generation capacity and the ability to transmit over 8,000 MW, the total active distribution capacity of the 11 DisCos in Nigeria remains around 4,000 MW.
