The contract comprises the construction of a 39 km-long road, cross culverts, two mini bridges spanning 23m each, and two creek bridges: Afa Creek Bridge (about 530m long) and Nanabie Creek Bridge (about 640m long).
This is in addition to constructing a major river bridge of about 750m over the Opobo Channel. The project is a tripartite agreement between the Federal Government, Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG), and Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.
Speaking during Julius Berger officials’ visit to the Bodo end of the project site, the Project Manager, Tim Limpert, praised the management of NLNG company, as well as the leadership of the operational communities and the Peace Committee, for the excellent relationship that has expedited project execution.
He said the company split work on the site into three zones: Filling, Loading, and Bridge Work to accelerate the construction process. Still focusing on the Opobo Channel bridge, Limpert noted that the river embankment sand-filling was proceeding, even as workers were busy preparing three more decks for casting and connecting with the old bridge; the ultimate goal is the installation of parapets.
According to him, sand filling was being carried out at the Afa Creek bridge approach.
Beyond the bridge, on the approach to the Opobo Channel bridge, more sand-filling work was being done to raise the level of the road under construction three metres higher to level it with the height of the bridge.
He said: “Everyone is working hard as Julius Berger plans a Christmas gift for communities. We aim to create a temporary road for side traffic while construction on this Opobo bridge lasts. At the end of work here, the temporary side road will be dismantled, as the road on top of the bridge will become usable by everyone. The casting of concrete decks on the two bridges alongside the Nanabie Creek bridge and filling were ongoing last week.”
Chief O. R. Longjohn, chairman of the Bodo-Bonny Road Project Peace Committee, prayed for the road’s timely completion.
“We have always trusted Julius Berger to do excellent work, and in a timely fashion, too. That faith in them has never waned; not even now,” he said.
