A top government official has dismissed reports of the attack on Wukari -Kente road allegedly involving the family of Governor Agbu Kefas on Thursday.
Naija News reported that Gunmen believed to be bandits, allegedly assaulted Jumai Kefas, the mother of Taraba State Governor, along with her daughter, Atsi Kefas.
The chairman of the Wukari council, Dauda Samaila Agbu, confirmed the attack to newsmen and expressed his sorrow regarding the event.
He characterized the situation as “deeply troubling” and revealed that Atsi Kefas suffered a gunshot injury during the assault, necessitating her initial treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Wukari before being transferred to Abuja for further medical care.
However, a top government official who spoke with Punch described the purported attack as fake news.
The source said, “The report of attack on the Governor’s mother and sister on the Wukari-Kente road is fake news.”
Speaking with journalists in Jalingo, the state capital, on Friday morning, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Usman, confirmed that robbery attack.
Usman said it is unknown whether the Governor’s mother and sister were among the victims, adding that investigations into the incident were ongoing to ensure that the perpetrators of the robbery are brought to justice.
He said, “Yes, we received a report of a robbery attack on Wukari -Kente road in the early hours of yesterday, but I can’t confirm whether the Governor’s mother and sister were among the victims.
“The said incident is being investigated and hopefully the perpetrators of the act will be brought to book. The people of Taraba should remain calm, as the police and other sister agencies are on top of the security situation in the state.”
