Social media users have taken to their official X accounts on Sunday, April 12, 2026, to react to comments made by former Kaduna lawmaker, Shehu Sani, following the conclusion of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) congresses held across several states in Nigeria.
The reactions came shortly after the spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress, Bolaji Abdullahi, publicly congratulated newly elected state executives and state chairmen across the federation, describing the congresses as peaceful and successful.
According to Bolaji Abdullahi, the exercise reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy and unity among members across different states of the country.
He stated:
“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) congratulates all newly elected State Executives and state chairmen across the federation on the successful and peaceful conduct of their congresses”.
Following the announcement, Shehu Sani reacted via his official X handle, calling on Nigerians to take a more active role in politics at the grassroots level, warning against political apathy and passive criticism.
His comment quickly gained attention online, sparking debates about civic responsibility, youth participation, and the role of citizens in shaping political leadership through party structures.
According to Shehu Sani:
“The party congresses are going on in your ward, you are not participating and you don’t even know the names of your ward executives. Your mates and younger ones are gearing up to contest the coming elections and you are not aspiring”.
Sani’s statement was widely interpreted as a call for increased political awareness, especially at the ward level, where party structures are formed and decisions about future candidates often begin.
However, the post generated mixed reactions from social media users who expressed differing opinions about his remarks. While some users agreed that Nigerians need to be more politically engaged, others argued that systemic challenges, lack of trust in political institutions, and limited opportunities discourage many citizens from active participation.
Some commenters said that political involvement should start early, especially among young people, to build stronger democratic values and ensure better representation in future elections. They noted that staying away from party activities often leads to a situation where decisions are made without broad participation.
