In a recent interview shared by the official YouTube channel of Arise TV on Saturday, May 30, 2026, Factional PDP Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong questioned the response of authorities to opposition political activities amid rising tensions within the political space.
Addressing concerns over alleged attempts to restrict gatherings, Ememobong suggested that such actions reflect deeper anxieties within the ruling structure. He argued that a government confident in its position should not feel threatened by lawful opposition engagements.
“If you have the president and institutions backing you, why are you afraid of opposition gatherings?” he asked, raising concerns about the implications for democratic tolerance. Ememobong maintained that opposition meetings are a normal part of any functioning democracy and should not be viewed as a threat. According to him, efforts to interfere with such activities could undermine political pluralism and weaken public confidence in governance.
He further stressed that the strength of democratic institutions is measured by their ability to accommodate dissent and differing viewpoints without resorting to intimidation or suppression.
The PDP spokesman also called for restraint among political actors, urging authorities to focus on governance rather than confrontation. He emphasized that ensuring equal political space for all parties remains critical to sustaining Nigeria’s democratic development and preventing unnecessary political friction.
