In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, Oladimeji Fabiyi spoke during a live political discussion where he addressed tensions among supporters of leading opposition figures and the rhetoric shaping political debates ahead of the 2027 elections.
During the interview, Fabiyi stated, “They say Atiku is old; why are Obi’s supporters afraid of a 100-meter dash?” He made the remark while reacting to criticisms and counter-criticisms exchanged among political camps on social media and in public discourse.
He emphasized that democratic competition should be based on ideas, policies, and track records rather than personal attacks or dismissive narratives about age or physical attributes.
Fabiyi explained that supporters of Peter Obi, often referred to as the Obidient movement, have been vocal in promoting their candidate, just as loyalists of Atiku Abubakar continue to defend his political relevance and experience.
According to him, such exchanges reflect the intensity of Nigeria’s political environment, but he cautioned that they should not distract from substantive national issues such as economic growth, governance, and institutional reforms.
He further noted that rivalry among supporters is common in politics, but stressed the importance of maintaining civility and focusing on constructive engagement rather than divisive rhetoric.
Fabiyi maintained that the emerging opposition coalition requires cooperation among all stakeholders, including supporters, to achieve its broader objective of presenting a credible alternative to the ruling government.
He added that unity within the opposition cannot be achieved if supporters continue to deepen divisions through unnecessary comparisons and personal attacks.
Fabiyi concluded by urging Nigerians, especially young voters and active political supporters, to engage in issue-based discussions and contribute positively to the democratic process as the 2027 elections approach.
