According to a report by Vanguard on Sunday, June 21, 2026, security concerns have heightened in parts of eastern Sokoto State following the Nigerian Army’s confirmation that it is reviewing intelligence reports alleging that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji and members of his group are conducting weapons training and tactical exercises in Isa Local Government Area.
The development has renewed anxiety among residents of communities along the Sokoto–Zamfara border, an area that has faced years of insecurity, including attacks, abductions, and livestock theft linked to armed groups.

Sources familiar with the security situation said the alleged activities are taking place around communities such as Bingabale, Bafarawa, Bargaja, and Gebe, located within Sokoto East Senatorial District, where Turji’s network has maintained a presence.
The reports claim that armed members loyal to the bandit leader, including associates identified as Illa Manawa and Dodo, said to be his younger brother, are involved in the training exercises. The activities reportedly include weapons handling and tactical preparations involving recently acquired firearms.
Security assessments indicate that the arrival of additional arms and the reported recruitment of new fighters with combat experience could increase the operational strength of armed groups in the area if not addressed.
The alleged training sessions are said to be occurring in remote locations connecting Sokoto and Zamfara States, a difficult terrain that has remained a major challenge for security operations despite ongoing efforts under Operation Fansan Yamma.
Further intelligence reports suggest that the group may have access to specialised equipment, including night-vision devices and other tactical materials. Investigators are also examining alleged roles of suspected commanders such as Kachalla Haru Dole and Kachalla Ibrahim Chimo in the movement of weapons and coordination of activities across the region.
A community security advocate, Basharu Altine Guyawa Isa, called for increased surveillance and stronger security measures to prevent possible attacks.
He said available information indicated that individuals linked to Bello Turji were carrying out weapons training with newly obtained arms, while new recruits with advanced fighting skills were also joining the group.
The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Lt. Col. Osoba Olaniyi, confirmed that the military had received the intelligence reports and was evaluating the information.
He said security agencies were taking necessary steps to respond to the situation and ensure the safety of affected communities.
