2027 Around The Corner—Confusion as Speaker Announces Chinda’s Defection to APC, Resignation as Minority Leader

According to a report by DAILY POST on Tuesday 2nd June 2026, there was confusion on Tuesday in the House of Representatives after Speaker Tajudeen Abbass announced that Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), leading to his resignation from the opposition leadership position.

The Speaker made the announcement while reading a letter on the floor of the House confirming Chinda’s defection; The letter, however, was reportedly dated April 23, 2026, a detail that immediately sparked questions among lawmakers over the timing and authenticity of the political move.

Following the announcement, Chinda stepped down as Minority Leader, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure as one of the leading figures of the PDP caucus in the chamber.

Chinda is also reported to have emerged as the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, a development that has further fueled political debate around his switch in party loyalty.

The lawmaker is currently facing legal scrutiny over allegations that his defection process did not comply with constitutional provisions, adding more tension to the unfolding situation.

With his resignation confirmed, the House is expected to begin the process of selecting a new Minority Leader to replace him.
