In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, June 22, 2026, former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, has expressed grief over the death of a teacher, Ummulkhairi, who was allegedly lynched by a mob in Jos after being accused of attempting to kidnap children.
According to him, Ummulkhairi left her home in New Maraban Jos to attend a lecture organized by Islamic scholars, including Malam Umar Waliy, whom he identified as his father. The lecture was scheduled to hold at Madrasat Tashiyhul Iman, a school founded by Malama Mardiyya in the old Maraba area.

Dalung said the teacher was unfamiliar with the exact location of the school and stopped to ask some children for directions after those who were supposed to accompany her had gone ahead.
“A few days ago, teacher Ummulkhairi left her home in New Maraban Jos with a simple purpose. She was going to attend a lecture organized by Malam Umar Waliy, my father, and other scholars at Madrasat Tashiyhul Iman, the school founded by Malama Mardiyya in the old Maraba area,” he wrote.
According to Dalung, what began as a routine request for directions quickly escalated when some women allegedly accused the teacher of attempting to kidnap the children. “Some women nearby suddenly raised an alarm and accused her of trying to kidnap the children. Within minutes, the accusation spread and attracted a crowd of young men. Before long, she was taken to the police station,” he stated.
Dalung further claimed that members of Ummulkhairi’s family and community later arrived at the police station and identified her as a respected teacher known in the area. He said they maintained that there was no evidence to support the allegation against her.
Despite those efforts, he alleged that tensions continued to rise outside the station. “The crowd outside refused to listen to reason. The atmosphere became increasingly tense. According to those who were there, the police said they were under pressure and had received instructions to remove her from the station because of the growing crowd,” he wrote.
Dalung alleged that appeals by relatives, scholars and other concerned persons failed to calm the situation. “In front of the police station, with people watching, Teacher Ummulkhairi begged for her life. Scholars who were present pleaded with the youths. Relatives and other concerned persons also appealed to them to show mercy. Their cries fell on deaf ears,” he stated.
He further claimed that the mob attacked and killed the teacher before setting her body ablaze. According to him, the motorcycle of a scholar who attempted to intervene was also burnt during the incident. “The mob attacked her mercilessly. They killed her and set her body on fire. They also burnt the motorcycle of the scholar who had stood by her and tried to save her,” he added.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Dalung lamented that Ummulkhairi had embarked on a journey to acquire knowledge but never returned home. “Teacher Ummulkhairi had left home that morning in search of knowledge. She never made it to the lecture. She never returned home,” he wrote.
