According to a report by footballTransfers on Friday May 8, 2026. Manchester United’s summer transfer plans are coming into focus, with the club making a definitive decision on Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and clarifying their stance on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
The Red Devils are in the market for at least one, possibly more, midfielders this summer. With Casemiro’s imminent departure, a defensive-minded player is essential, and the club also aims to bolster their squad ahead of next season’s Champions League campaign.
The list of potential targets remains extensive and fluid, but recent developments have shed light on the prospects for Palmer and Baleba.
According to The Mirror, Manchester United have decided that signing Palmer is no longer a priority this summer. While there was speculation earlier this year about a return to Manchester, the 24-year-old has dampened those rumors.
Despite Chelsea’s internal discontent, notably involving Enzo Fernandez, Palmer’s form has been inconsistent.
With an estimated transfer value of €98 million and an asking price of €105m (£90m), along with a contract until 2033 worth €63m (£54.6m), a move for Palmer appears financially challenging.
Additionally, Bruno Fernandes’s commitment to United raises questions about how both players would fit into the same midfield.
The club remains interested in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, rekindling their pursuit of the Cameroon international midfielder. United previously explored a deal last summer but were deterred by Brighton’s valuation of over €100m.
Although Baleba has not been as prominent this season, United see his potential and are open to negotiating.
Transfer insider Ben Jacobs suggests that Brighton’s willingness to sell will be key. “Baleba isn’t in decline, and Manchester United still see his upside,” he said.
“They don’t need to negotiate with the player directly since they agreed terms last summer. If they proceed, it’ll be a matter of negotiating with Brighton.”
Jacobs added, “Brighton hasn’t set a firm price yet, but if United go for Baleba, they’re aiming for a deal below the €75m they considered last summer likely around £70m.”
While United have ruled out a move for Palmer, interest in Baleba remains strong provided the price is right. The transfer window is shaping up to be a pivotal period for the club’s midfield overhaul.
